This article examines President Pervez Musharraf's roadmap to democracy and the role the United States can play in bolstering his efforts. The events after 11 September and the war on terrorism have complicated the American goal of fostering democracy abroad and increased uncertainties and worries regarding Pakistan's domestic situation and its transition to civilian rule. Despite these complications, the Unites States should become actively involved in helping Pakistani society build a lasting democracy. |
